Aiyietpse . f Having heretofore placed the higheft degree of confidence in the good intentions of -our Chief Magiltrate towards his Majefty’s mio loyal and faithful fubjects, the good people of this dominion, over whom he pretides, which we can fafely athrm had gained him their univerfal efteem and refpect, with equal lurprife and forrow we have feen, in our public gazettes, extracts of a letter faid to be wrote by our faid Chief Magiltrate, on the 24th of December laft, to the Earl of Dartmouth, one of his Majeity’s principal Secreta- ries of State, moft grotily mifreprefenting all the good people of this colony, particularly the magiftrates, and thofe whom the people have elected as committees to be the guardians of their in- eftimable rights and liberties; and as his Excellency has not thought proper to difavow being the author of fuch letter, we mutt take it for granted that the extract publifhed ‘is @ faithful copy: - We therefore think it our indifpenfable duty, in juftice to our own reputations, and that of our conitituents, who have honoured us with fuch marks of their confidence and efteem, to refute fo un- juftand unmerited, fo defamatory and atrocious a charge. Firit, then, we declare that we know of no inftance wherein any com- mittee in this or the neighbouring counties has affumed an autho- rity to infpeét the books, or any other fecrets of the trade of mer- chants. We admit to have known fome inftances where {ome merchants, being fufpected of a breach of the aflociation, have vo- luntarily offered fome private letters and books to be infpected, in order to acquit themfelves of fuch charge. | He next fays, we itigmatize thofe we difcover to have tranf- grefied what we hardity call the laws of the Congrefs; which fticmatizine, to'ufe the words in tHe faid ‘extra&t, “ is no other «¢ than inviting the vengeance of an outrageous and lawlefs mob <¢ to be exercifed on the unhappy viétims.”* Several in this bo- and county have'been held up for public cenfure for breaches eo ‘ouch of the aflociation, but no vengeance of any mob or individual has been inflicted on them, not even that fafhionable one lately intro- duced by the troops under the command of General Gage;- and we could call upon fundry perfons here, who were thus ftigmatized, to juftify this affertion. We wiih his Excellency had deigned to name the county where the committee had proceeded fo far as to {wear the men of their independent company to execute all orders which they fhould give them, as it is a piece of information entirely new to us, as wellas | that of every other county forming an independent company for the avowed purpofe (as he fays) of protecting their committees, and to be employed againit Goverment, if occafion require. We hope all the dark plots of our moft fecret or declared enemies will prove imeffectual in bringing matters to that unhappy iflue; and we have fo hich an opinion of the virtue of our countrymen, that we look upon the folemnity of an oath altogether unneceflary to ftimulate them to ftand forth firm and. intripid upon all juft oc- cafions in fupport of their civil and religious rights and liberties. Whillt we were thus fondly flattering ourfelves that we had, in his Excellency, a moft powerful advocate in order to accommo- date the unhappy difputes fubfifting between Great Britain and the colonies, we leave the world to judge what poignant forrow we mutt feei on the difcovery that it was a vain delufion, and that, snf{tead of the good offices we expected, he was all the time widen- ing’the breach by muifreprefenting fo greatly out conduct to thofe 1 power; and we now difcover, from his Excellency’ faid let- = ter, that his gentle and lenient conduét, which we were too ready 3 Pa 2 By bis Excellency ihe Right Hon.
